Learning Objectives: Music-Majors. Non-music majors by audition only and approval of instructor. Performance skills for vocal soloists with small jazz combo. Vocal jazz repertoire covered and basic vocal & rhythm section arranging and chart writing techniques covered. A course designed to examine the various aspects of jazz performance in a small group setting (5-7 members). This course will provide students with the proper laboratory experience that will enable them to refine theoretical and performance practices. Major emphasis will be placed upon the study of stylistic and improvisational trends by select small group performers from Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, and Ella Fitzgerald, Jon Hendricks and others. Introduction to jazz theory and ear training as it relates to the vocal jazz repertoire (swing, bebop, blues, latin, fusion, and hybrid genres). Includes working with piano and/or guitar accompanist and with rhythm section, arranging for vocals and arranging for rhythm section with voice. Semester culminates in performances in BN Duke Auditorium in NCCU Jazz Studies Jazz Combo Concert, Guest Artist Series (Fall Semester) and/or Jazz Festival (Spring Semester).
