Learning Objectives: • Describe historical developments in the understanding of the nature of the atom; • Distinguish between chemical and physical changes; • Distinguish and apply theoretical principles to solids, liquids and gases; • Convert various units of measure into other units; • Write and balance simple chemical equations; • Relate an element’s position in the Periodic Chart to that element’s atomic structure, and then to relate that structure to that element’s chemical reactivity • Use modern atomic theory to predict molecular structure; • Effectively communicate scientific information in both oral and written forms. • Safely and effectively perform proper laboratory work involving measurement, characterization, record keeping, and proper waste disposal for various substances both individually and working in teams. • Use computer technology to acquire and statistically analyze and graph experimental data.
Required Materials: You must purchase or have access to Chemistry, The Molecular Science, 4th Edition (media enhanced edition), by Moore, Stanitski and Jurs, published by Cengage Learning). If in severe financial limitations, you may share the book, but you MUST purchase the OWL access code for this semester, minimum.
Technical Requirements: Students should have mastered basic mathematical manipulations including the ability to solve elementary algebraic expressions.
