Learning Objectives: Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Physical Space and Environment 1. Create a new learning environment or adapt an existing environment so that it is developmentally appropriate for preschoolers with typical and atypical needs. (2.1) 2. Create a multicultural preschool/kindergarten environment, or adapt an existing one, so that it is reflective of the homes and communities of the children and families. (2.2) 3. Identify and use developmental principles in creating or adapting indoor and outdoor learning environments for children in preschool & kindergarten (ages 3 to 6). (2.3) 4. Within the classroom environment, plan appropriate large group, small group, and individual times. (2.4) Lesson Planning and Curriculum 5. Foster high quality interactions with children during play and in guiding children’s inquiry and discovery. (2.5) 6. Plan an appropriate balance between child-initiated and adult-initiated activities, based on the needs of the preschoolers and kindergarteners. (2.6) 7. Provide individual and group learning times through a variety of formats including play, environment routines, parent-mediated activities, and guided inquiry, relevant to preschool and kindergarten, including methods for sensorimotor, cognitive, adaptive, language/communication, social, aesthetic, emotional, and physical development. (2.7) 8. Facilitate children’s involvement in planning for their own learning using appropriate strategies. (2.8) 9. Facilitate learning through play and child-initiated activities (2.11) 10. Incorporate a variety of teaching strategies including physical prompts, play intervention, direct and indirect teaching, child-initiated learning, fostering motivation in children, and using developmentally and functionally appropriate technology. (2.12) 11. Utilize various planning strategies including cooperative planning, problem solving with other adults, involvement of professional team members, teacher assistants, and parents in programs for children aged three years old through kindergarten. (3.8) 12. Facilitate concrete experiences and the integration of knowledge about the physical and social world and the arts. (3.9) Cultural Diversity 13. Understand cultural diversity and integrate a multicultural perspective throughout the curriculum. 14. Follow developmental and functional curricula and methods for children in preschool & kindergarten (ages 3 to 6), across all areas of development and learning: sensorimotor, cognitive, adaptive, language/communication, social and aesthetic, emotional, and physical. (3.12) Students will have achieved these desired outcomes if they are able to: 1. Complete student activities that address three areas—physical space and environment, lesson planning and curriculum, and cultural diversity. 2. Explain, analyze, and evaluate key concepts via the discussion board, quizzes, exams, essays, cooperative learning, and class discussions.
