Learning Objectives: Course Objectives: 1. Students demonstrate knowledge and use of the social science concepts, facts, generalizations and skills which provide the content basis for elementary social studies. 2. Students will demonstrate mastery of the content, skills, and competencies required by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), in the areas of elementary social studies. 3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of and use of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) for elementary social studies. 4. Students will design and implement classroom activities that demonstrate sensitivity to and an understanding of diverse cultural groups, learning styles, and performance levels. 5. Students will design and implement developmentally appropriate activities that will enhance the attitudes, values, knowledge, and skills necessary for effective citizenry in a culturally diverse society. 6. Students will model effective instructional strategies for elementary social studies. 7. Students will develop integrated and interdisciplinary units of study. 8. Students will create experiences that will facilitate the students’ development of critical thinking, problem solving, inquiry and independent learning skills. 9. Students will explain and use assessment procedures that facilitate student learning. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. The student will be able to apply knowledge and understanding of effective, developmentally, appropriate, instructional methods for the teaching and learning of social studies during a 15-hours field experiences in an elementary school setting. 2. Students will be able to use knowledge and understanding of effective, developmentally, appropriate, instructional methods for the teaching and learning of social studies to design and present micro-teaching mini lessons using key concepts and generalizations in the fields of anthropology, sociology, political science, economics, history, geography, and the humanities 3. The student will be able to use resources such as the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh, NC, and other historical galleries and museum in close proximity to North Carolina Central University or students’ area of residence in developing instructional strategies to present during designated times during the course.
