Learning Objectives: Course Objectives: 1. Students will gain knowledge about the factors that are associated with literacy acquisition during the prereading period. 2. Students will understand the importance of the five essential components of scientifically based reading instruction, and develop a repertoire of effective strategies for each component. 3. Students will learn the current methods of assessing and teaching reading and related communication skills in classroom settings. 4. Students will become familiar with literature-based approaches to reading instruction and the role of multicultural children’s literature in the elementary curriculum. 5. Students will improve their oral and written communication skills as a means of enhancing their personal and professional growth. 6. Students will be acquainted with and incorporate the Common Core Standards for Literacy adopted by North Carolina. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. The student will be able to create a reading portfolio consisting of field and class experiences on the basis of scientifically-based reading research. The portfolio will include the essential components of scientifically-based reading research including phonemic awareness, vocabulary, phonics, comprehension, fluency, and common core standards in literacy (literature, informational text, foundational skills) 2. The student will be able to critically analyze the essential components of scientifically-based reading research and use this analysis to design instructional strategies and criterion-referenced reading and writing assessments. 3. The student will be able to develop a thematic until with lesson plans that incorporate the common core standard in reading (e.g., Reading Standards for Literature, Informational Texts, and Foundational Skills) and scientifically-based reading research.
