Learning Objectives: Learning Objectives 1. Students will be able to define the terms leader and leadership. 2. Students will be able to distinguish the difference between leadership and management. 3. Students will take a position on the discussion of whether leaders are born or made and will be able to defend their position on the topic. 4. Students will take a position on whether leadership is contingent on one having a moral obligation. 5. Students will discuss the value of managing diversity and its affect on team building. Specifically, students will be able to discuss the value of ¿group think¿ versus freedom of expression and thought. 6. Students will gain an understanding of their personal leadership style and philosophy by participating in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator ®. Personality Type or Psychological Type are terms most commonly associated with the model of personality development created by Isabel Briggs Myers (also known as - Briggs Meyer, Meyer Briggs, Briggs Myers) the author of the world's most widely used personality inventory, the MBTI or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator ®. Myers and her mother, Katharine Briggs, developed their model and inventory around the ideas and theories of psychologist Carl Jung, a contemporary of Sigmund Freud and a leading exponent of Gestalt personality theory. Additionally, students will take the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior (FIRO-B) inventories and completing personal assessments. For more than 40 years the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior¿ (FIRO-B®) assessment has helped people around the world understand how their need for inclusion, control and affection can shape their interactions with others at work or in their personal life. 7. Students will be able to analyze the leadership of others by completing an assignment that assesses leadership qualities of Abraham Lincoln and The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition, students will complete a case study on someone they identify as a leader and apply the Kouzes & Posner framework to analyzing the data s/he receives from the case study. 8. Students will gain a working knowledge of the power of public speaking and the importance of making effective presentations as a leader.
Required Materials: Required Reading: Kouzes and Posner (2012). The Leadership Challenge (5th Edition). ISBN - 978-0-470-65172-8. Selected Readings: Selected readings will be assigned to students throughout the semester and the references provided when assigned.
Technical Requirements: Assignments Assignment 1: Who were History¿s Great Leaders? List your top five world leaders of all time. Provide a brief rationale for why you include each leader in your top five listing. What made this person a great leader? How did your leaders raise to the top? Were they trained or self taught? What was the effect of personality or charisma on their ability to lead? Were they driven by a moral imperative? How did they build support for their movement? Did they have a movement? How did they cultivate others to lead? Assignment 2: Did Lincoln Save the Union? Read the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln¿s second inaugural address, and the emancipation proclamation. After reading these items, assess Abraham Lincoln¿s war strategy. Answer the question was Abraham Lincoln a relevant leader? In addition, assess the strategic value of the emancipation proclamation. Was Lincoln more focused on saving the Union or achieving a moral outcome (the abolishment of slavery)? How were these competing interests balanced? After reading these items, assess Dr. King¿s strategy for attaining social change through the non-violent movement. What kind of leader was Dr. King? How did Dr. King¿s strategy as a leader evolve over the years? Was Dr. King becoming more impatient with the progress of the movement? You will need to put this goal in behavioral and measurable terms and submit it to me as a contract. In a short conference we will determine if your goal is sufficiently challenging and measurable. If sufficient, then your goal will be approved. Since you will provide in your contract the criteria for grading your accomplishment of your goal, you will be grading yourself. At the end of the course, you will be asked to submit a grade for yourself with a justification and explanation of your accomplishment according to the criteria you set at the beginning of the course. Goal in behavioral and measurable terms: Criteria for grading accomplishment: Self Assessment 2: Written Philosophy Statement One of the position application requirements for a senior management position is a one page statement on your leadership philosophy. What would you write? Be brief (one page) but be complete. When finished reading, the reader should have a good understanding of your leadership philosophy. Self Assessment 3: Leadership Case Study This assignment asks you to validate the Kouzes/Posner leadership framework by doing your own research, in the form of a case study. Select an individual you feel has made a difference, a person you admire or potentially admire as a leader. Interview this person about his or her personal best leadership experience. Write up this case study, using the Kouzes & Posner leadership framework, including areas of agreement, and disagreement, between your evidence and that predicted by the model. Use examples and quotations to illustrate your point and remember that your presentation should be written as an essay and not as an interview. Conclude with comments about (a) the efficiency of the leadership framework, and (b) personal lessons and insights on leadership based on your case student data. Self Assessment 4: Teams What constitutes a team and what differentiates a good team from a not so good or bad team os one of the more challenging aspects of organizational leadership. What influence(s) can a leader who is a team member have with /over a team? Discuss these issues (plus any others related to teams) with several members of team you belong to and indicate areas of agreement and controversy. Discuss what you believe the pros and cons of teams and teamwork. Class Requirements: Reaction Pieces and Assignments: 35% Self Assessments: 10 Mid-term Exam: 20 15-minute Presentation: 15 (Oral with Power Point) Final Exam (Open Book): 20%
